Time well spent… finding the time to co-create & innovate! |
A consistent challenge we hear teams struggle with is having too much to discuss with the client in the typical bi-monthly design meetings. As part of our co-create process, we need clients to inform how the building functions, feels, and looks during these meetings. So we were curious…how much face-to-face time on average do we have with clients during a typical design process?
Hard to believe… but we get one work week (in formal meetings on average) with clients to discover & decide on components that create the learning experiences within a building designed to last decades! But as many teams have started to discover, the use of time between meetings can also be effectively used to “continue the conversation”. Interestingly enough – teachers were dealing with the same issue in tackling complex learning subjects with students over the course of a semester. For many teachers, they have come to rely on the flipped classroom as a way to deliver content!
The goal of the flipped classroom is to preserve classroom time for discussion, interaction, and collaboration rather than for lecture and direction. How might this concept and others like it help us within the design process, encouraging the 40 hours of client face time to be time well spent in discussion, exploration and collaboration with our co-creation partners?
We’ll use April to explore some of the efforts our own teams have tried as well as explore other tools and methods in our quest to find more “time” for innovative design.
